Students made Owl Bags today to keep their Valentine’s Day cards all in one place!

On the 100th day of school, we did a number scavenger hunt to find all the numbers around the classroom. Then we tried to place them in order from 1-100! It was quite the task!

We built towers using cups. We shared 100 cups and then we built with 100 cups all together!

The question was: If there are two bicycles, how many wheels are there all together? What if there was 4 bicycles…. and so on. We are very good at counting by 2s!

More stacking. We invented many ways to stack these cups!

Oops! We have to watch those 5s! These are all the ways in which students found how to make 10! I especially like how this student knew that 4+6 and 6+4 both equal 10! Great work!

Math Games

Here are some math games we have been playing in the classroom recently. Some have been modified or adapted from the instructions, so if your child has a different version that is ok.

Games we have played:

dice activities – winter freebie

  • this game can be played using a dice, counting one more or one less, 2 more or 2 less and also adding two dice together (only some answers will be shown/It will not have 11 or 12).

War: you can also modify the game “war” by asking students to add the two cards put down. Ex. 4 and 5 = 9. Speed or simply accuracy can be your goal. Face cards become 10 and A becomes 1.

Games and activities we have not tried yet, but will be soon:

Math

Students have been working on a number of different concepts in Number Sense and Addition. Here we have students jumping through numbers 1-20 counting by 2s.

Here, students are using a 100 chart to count by 5s and 10s.

Today, we read the following story about making 10. Ask your students what the story was about!

Students then used ten frames to represent all the ways in which we could show 10. Example, 1+9/2+8/3+7/6+4/5+5

Constable Rich Visit

We had an exciting visit from Contable Rich today who taught us about his toolbelt as well as our own. He showed us all the cool things he carries around each day. Then we read Llama Llama and talked about our emotions. Together we discussed some different ways in which we can calm down when we become angry, frustrated, etc. Ask students about different strategies they learned today.
